How is rekeying different from replacing a lock?
Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration of your existing cylinder so the old keys no longer work. The hardware (deadbolt body, handle, strike plate) stays in place. Lock replacement removes the entire hardware assembly and installs new hardware. Rekeying costs 60 to 80 percent less than full replacement and achieves the same security goal: voiding all old keys. How many locks can you rekey in one visit?
As many as needed. WOW Locks carries comprehensive pinning kits for Schlage, Kwikset, Defiant, Baldwin, Mul-T-Lock, and most other residential and commercial brands. We have rekeyed 30-unit apartment complexes and 40-door commercial buildings in a single extended visit. For large properties, we recommend scheduling a 3 to 4 hour window so we can work through every door systematically.
Can you rekey any brand?
Most brands, yes. Standard pin-tumbler cylinders from Schlage, Kwikset, Defiant, Baldwin, and most residential brands are rekeyed in the field with no issues. Medeco high-security cylinders require factory pin kits and are not fully field-rekeyed without them. Mul-T-Lock MT5+ is field-rekeyed with our specialty kit. How much does rekeying cost?
Residential rekeying is $30 per lock with a 3-lock minimum, plus parts and tax. A new keyset (2 keys) is $15 additional. Each extra key copy is $5. Commercial rekeying is $45 per lock with a 2-lock minimum. So a standard 3-lock residential home with a new keyset runs $90 base plus $15 for keys, plus parts and tax.
